ESA Lift: The Treatment Your Skin Didn’t Know It Needed

If you’ve been hearing us talk about the ESA Lift around the clinic and wondering what it actually does, this one’s for you.

ESA — or Electrical Skin Activation — is one of the newer technologies we’ve introduced to our treatment menu, and it’s quickly become one of our favourite ways to give the skin a little extra attention. It’s non-invasive, requires no downtime, and can be enjoyed on its own or incorporated into other treatments depending on your skin goals. But what makes ESA different? Let’s get into it.

What is ESA?
ESA uses controlled electrical stimulation to work with the skin and underlying facial muscles. During treatment, specialized probes are moved across targeted areas of the face to create gentle muscle contractions and stimulation. Think of it as a workout for the face — but with benefits that go beyond simply activating the muscles. ESA can help support facial toning and definition, circulation, lymphatic movement, and an overall refreshed appearance. It’s especially lovely when the skin is looking tired, puffy or in need of a little pick-me-up.

What can ESA help with?
One of the reasons we love ESA is that it can address several concerns at once. Depending on your individual skin and treatment plan, it may help:

  • Improve the appearance of facial tone and definition

  • Lift and sculpt the look of facial contours

  • Reduce the appearance of puffiness

  • Support healthy circulation

  • Leave the complexion looking brighter and more refreshed

  • Complement your existing facial treatments and skincare routine

You may notice that freshly sculpted, refreshed look immediately following your appointment, while a series of treatments is typically recommended when we’re working toward more progressive results.

What’s actually happening during an ESA Lift treatment?

Here’s where ESA gets a little more interesting. While you can see and feel the facial muscles responding during treatment, the goal isn’t simply to make them contract. Our muscles naturally respond to electrical signals from the nervous system. ESA uses controlled electrical stimulation to trigger targeted muscle contractions, allowing us to work specific areas of the face without relying on voluntary movement. This is why you may notice little lifts, twitches or contractions throughout your treatment — it’s the targeted muscle responding to the electrical stimulation.

At the same time, this stimulation encourages local circulation and movement within the treated area. Increased blood flow temporarily brings more oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, while the rhythmic contractions can help encourage fluid movement — one of the reasons the face can look less puffy, more defined and noticeably refreshed immediately afterward.

Why does muscle stimulation matter for the face?
We spend a lot of time talking about the skin itself — collagen, hydration, pigmentation and the skin barrier — but the appearance of the face is influenced by more than the surface of our skin. Our underlying facial muscles contribute to facial movement and contour. ESA gives us another layer to work with by targeting those muscles while many of our other treatments focus primarily on the skin.

That distinction is important: ESA isn’t replacing skincare, peels, microneedling or other skin-focused treatments. It’s doing something different.

That’s also why we love pairing it with other modalities. We can create a treatment plan that addresses the quality and appearance of the skin at the surface while also incorporating targeted muscle stimulation and facial sculpting — giving us another tool to customize your treatment based on what we actually want to accomplish.

The immediate glow vs. progressive results
One of the best parts about ESA is that you don’t necessarily have to wait to see anything happening. Following a treatment, improved circulation, fluid movement and muscle stimulation can leave the face looking more lifted, defined and refreshed.

But it’s important to separate those immediate effects from longer-term treatment goals.

Just like most aesthetic treatments, ESA isn’t a one-and-done solution for lasting change. When facial toning and definition are the goal, consistency matters. A series of treatments allows us to repeatedly stimulate the targeted areas and build ESA into a more comprehensive skin and facial treatment plan.

What does an ESA treatment feel like?
This is definitely a treatment you’ll feel working. Because ESA is stimulating the facial muscles, you’ll feel gentle contractions, tapping or movement as we work across different areas of the face. The intensity can be adjusted throughout your appointment, so the treatment can be customized to you while still effectively stimulating the targeted areas. There’s no need to hide out afterward, either. ESA requires no downtime, making it an easy treatment to fit into your regular routine.

ESA Lift on its own — or as an upgrade

The ESA Lift treatment can be booked as a standalone treatment when you want to focus specifically on sculpting, toning and refreshing the appearance of the face. It can also be incorporated into select facial treatments, which is where we really love having it in our treatment toolbox. Adding ESA allows us to take an already customized facial one step further and address more than just the surface of the skin.

Because great skin isn’t about doing everything — it’s about choosing the right treatments for what your skin needs.

Is ESA right for you?
As with any treatment, ESA isn’t necessarily the right fit for everyone. Your medical history, implanted electrical devices and certain health conditions can affect whether electrical stimulation treatments are appropriate, which is why we’ll always review contraindications before treatment.

If you’re unsure whether ESA belongs in your treatment plan, ask us at your next appointment. We can take a look at your skin, chat about what you’d like to improve, and determine whether ESA Lift makes sense for your goals.

Ready to give your facial routine a little lift? ESA might just become your new favourite add-on.
